Packing has commenced

theBigMess

I finally have a plane ticket, and will be leaving for Korea on March 5th. I have begun packing both items to be stored here, and items I will be taking with me or shipping to me in Korea.

Packing, for me, is an involved process. Ideally, I use absolutely no space wasters like styrofoam packing material or crumpled paper. Every nook and cranny is filled with an item. When I'm done with a box, there isn't a free inch, and nothing can move or shift.

The upside of this is that I pack my belongings into the most compact possible space, and I don't need filler material. The downside is that packing becomes complex and time-consuming, as I roam around, eyeing all the remaining items and trying to find one that will fit in the space I have. Also, boxes packed by me tend to be quite heavy.

Packing suitcases is a similar process. You know how the tow handle leaves two bars across the bottom of the suitcase, leaving valuable space unused, unless you fit small items into those spaces? I always use socks, underwear, scarves, and other small items to fill in those spaces, as well as corners and edges. I can fit a lot of stuff in a suitcase! Other people have been amazed by how many things I can fit in. The downside, again, is that they are heavy! Also, the items I need most often are then on the very bottom. Oh well, at least that's only a problem if I don't unpack!

  1. Hi, Tora. I have the same Swiss Army baggage. I bought it at Target. It's even the same color. As you know, that bag has a handle on the bottom. It's useful because you can pick it up easily at the airport, but it might be too heavy and you could get a backache. Be careful and good luck! I want to read your blog and comment during your time in Korea.

  2. (Sorry, that was actually Shuji--the "comment as" thing is kind of bizarre and didn't warn me that I was already logged in or anything. :/)

  4. Tora! I wish I could have seen you off to the airport, or at least seen you during your last few days here in CA. Remember to blog a bit here so we know how you're doing, ok? Ok!
